May 8th, 2018 - Emma Douglas

Starting in the morning, we ate bread and jam which is a typical meal for a Peruvian breakfast but was certainly strange for a couple of us since we don’t normally eat before classes. There are three other girls in our homestay staying with us, their names are Anna, Alex and Sarah. They are from Vanderbilt and are here with a service group for two weeks.

After breakfast, we headed to ISA for our first day of class! It was a very exciting time as we began our journey into global leadership. It was interesting to learn about what it was and what it entailed. We also learned about some history during this class, mostly about Globalization and how it impacted the world throughout the years. After our class, we had our first debrief. During our debrief we all talked about how our homestays were going and all of the food we had been eating since coming here. It was incredibly interesting to hear about all of the foods that were being served, especially since the only thing our house has served is rice, chicken, potatoes, and quinoa. As delicious as it is, it was interesting to hear about the other dishes that were being served like egg and English muffin sandwich and fruit salad and meatball curry over rice.

After our debriefing there was a break for lunch and a nap. And following that, we had our tour around ISA. It was so much fun to see all of the different stores and people on the street and to see all of the coffee shops that are around. When we were walking around, we passed this sandwich shop that had a Hawaiian style sandwich, which looked really good minus the ham, and that lead to a discussion about pizza. Personally, I find thin crust pineapple pizza with extra cheese to be the best. Some find that strange because there is no meat. The driving here is insane, it’s like there are no rules for these drivers, or they just don’t care that much. To cross the street, we took a walking bridge. Here, the boys decided that they wanted a picture of just them, us girls are fairly certain that they’re going to form a big boy band or something. Feeling a little left out, we decided to take a picture of our own. On our tour, we went to the local mall where we got Churros. They were the most delicious churros I have ever tried. There were four flavors available: chocolate, strawberry, passionfruit, and lucuma (sweet milk).

So much more happened throughout the day but there’s so little time to talk about it, can’t wait to explore more!

First day of class with everyone happy and participating.

All of the Horizon's girls on the trip forming a girl cult in response to the forming boy cult.

Happy churros!
